Chapter 13: Bigger and Better
(pg 89)

Quote of the Day:

“Actually, the real game of Bigger and Better that Jesus is playing with us usually isn’t about money or possessions or even our hopes. It’s about our pride. He asks if we’ll give up that thing we’re so proud of, that thing we believe causes us to matter in the eyes of the world, and give it up to follow Him. He’s asking us, “Will you take what you think defines you, leave it behind, and let Me define who you are instead?” – Love Does by Bob Goff, pg 92

Scripture Reference:

Mark 10:17-27

17 As He was setting out on a journey, a man ran up to Him and knelt before Him, and asked Him, “Good Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?” 18 And Jesus said to him, “Why do you call Me good? No one is good except God alone. 19 You know the commandments, ‘Do not murder, Do not commit adultery, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Do not defraud, Honor your father and mother.’” 20 And he said to Him, “Teacher, I have kept all these things from my youth up.” 21 Looking at him, Jesus felt a love for him and said to him, “One thing you lack: go and sell all you possess and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.” 22 But at these words [a]he was saddened, and he went away grieving, for he was one who owned much property.

23 And Jesus, looking around, *said to His disciples, “How hard it will be for those who are wealthy to enter the kingdom of God!” 24 The disciples were amazed at His words. But Jesus *answered again and *said to them, “Children, how hard it is to enter the kingdom of God! 25 It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.” 26 They were even more astonished and said to Him, “[b]Then who can be saved?” 27 Looking at them, Jesus *said, “With people it is impossible, but not with God; for all things are possible with God.”

Putting Love into Action:

What is something that God is asking you to trade up and follow Him in? Spend a few moments this week asking God to show you. What is holding you back from knowing God more?

Question/Discussion:

Have you experienced a time in your life where God challenged you to give up something you held onto so tightly?

OR

Is there something that you’re struggling with right now – something you’re standing on the porch holding onto and God is offering the Bigger and Better for?

Post your comments below for today’s question/discussion. I can’t wait to hear your answers!

  1. I didn’t intentionally give this up – it just sort of happened. Several years ago we decided to turn the TV off. And we didn’t miss it. Now, I see that God replaced that time in my life with writing and studying and reading. It was TOTALLY bigger and better – and I didn’t even know it at the time. I’m thankful God took that desire away from me.

I constantly feel as though I’m standing on the porch with ALL MY STUFF. I know it might seem comical, but I really struggle with things. Not that I really feel like I need to have more stuff to keep up with people – that’s not it at all. And I really don’t struggle anymore with the need to shop – it has started frustrating me to even have to shop!! But, the stuff in our house holds me back. Whenever I go to get rid of stuff it actually stresses me because I feel this need to hold onto stuff – whether it is sentimental value or something that I think I’ll need or that I could save to give to someone at the right time. It’s crazy. It’s hard to even explain.

I need God to work in me to release all the things that are cluttering our life and home. I’ve even been taught an unexpected lesson from my daughters this week in this area of my life. I’ll share that later 🙂

    1. We gave up on TV too and had the same result!! I’m so thankful God replaced that with more time for Him!!! I also think about my job I gave up to be a stay at home mom. I loved teaching but instead of one baby and going back to work – God gave me twins and the thought of giving half my pay check away, it made more sense to stay home. Had I went back to work, things would have been different- I bet I wouldn’t be homeschooling and have 6 kids!!!!! Gods plans are always better!!!

      1. He TOTALLY had bigger and better in mind for you, friend 🙂 Glad that we aren’t the only ones that don’t keep up with the TV anymore. People look at us so strange sometimes when they ask if we’ve seen a program….um, no. Sorry. Ha!

  2. Giving up things has been easy for me. I think that comes from moving so much.

For me, I think the bigger and better is opportunities to step out of my comfort zone. whether it be the new position at work or being open and transparent when talking with others or leading a class on oils. When I take these steps, sometimes I feel His hand guiding (or actually nudging) me.

Father, whatever that is in my life that hinders me from You, please give me the wisdom to let it go and trade up for the bigger and better that You have in store for my life.

    1. I’m so proud of you for taking the job outside of your comfort zone. You said YES to God – and He once again is faithful to do something amazing in your life. Amen!!
