Today’s Bible Reading:
The Widow’s Offering
41Jesus sat down near the collection box in the Temple and watched as the crowds dropped in their money. Many rich people put in large amounts. 42Then a poor widow came and dropped in two small coins.
43Jesus called his disciples to him and said, “I tell you the truth, this poor widow has given more than all the others who are making contributions. 44For they gave a tiny part of their surplus, but she, poor as she is, has given everything she had to live on.”
Verse of the Day:
Whew. 40 verses yesterday…only 4 today! 🙂
I absolutely love how direct and short this reading is.
Jesus sits near the collection box and watches people put in their money.
First of all, how many people would like this nowadays?? What if the Pastor did this?? Hmmmm.
Rich people come by and drop in lots of money.
A widow comes by and drops in 2 small coins.
How do you think she felt dropping in these coins in front of Jesus? Do you think she felt ashamed? How do we feel when the offering plate is passed down our row at church and someone puts in $20 when we put in $1 or a few quarters?
Jesus calls over the disciples to make a point and teach them (and us) a valuable lesson when it comes to giving.
Most people would think nothing of someone dropping 2 small coins into the offering plate. Jesus points out that she gave more than anyone else that day. They only gave a small portion of their abundance, but she – she gave it all – everything she had to live on.
What dependence on God!
How many times do we hold on to what we have with our closed fists?
She didn’t have a closed fist. No, she opened her hands and gave it all away.
I’m not so sure she felt ashamed. I can only imagine that maybe she felt a reassuring presence come over her and that she knew she had nothing to lose.
Her giving became a true sacrifice that honored God in every way possible.
The others left with their abundance.
God, give us the faith to reach deep down inside and give of ourselves in ways that sacrifice. Don’t let us become complacent with giving only out of our abundance. Teach us what it means to depend on You and to live with a faith like only You can give. Amen!
What stood out to you today from the story with the Widow’s offering?
